Biology of Belief

“Thought energy can activate or inhibit the cell’s function.” – Bruce Lipton

In The Biology of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter, & Miracles, cell biologist Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., writes about how his work with cells led him to believe that genes and DNA do not control a person’s biology. Rather, signals from outside the cell control biology.

In his research, Lipton says that he saw in the Petri dish how cells in a good environment thrive and in a bad environment don’t. Lipton refers to genes as the blueprint and environment as the contractor. Just as a building blueprint is interpreted by the contractor, the gene blueprint is interpreted by the environment. Environmental influences, including nutrition, stress, and emotions can change genes without changing their blueprint.

Cells have receptors that respond to their environment, including substances such as estrogen, insulin, histamines, etc. But not only do a cell’s receptors respond to physical substances, they also respond to vibrational energy fields such as light, sound, and radio frequencies.

Lipton’s conclusion is that the DNA does not “program” the cell, as traditionally believed, but the signals that come in through the cell’s receptors program the DNA. Genetics is not destiny. A person’s responses to environmental signals determine the character of one’s life.

Lipton’s conclusion is supported by research in epigenetics, the study of how environmental signals control the activity of genes. Epigenetics indicates that genes are constantly remodeled in response to life experiences.

The belief part comes in because cells respond to vibrational frequencies. Thoughts, perceptions, and beliefs are vibrational frequencies; therefore, cells respond to these thoughts. The problem is that not all your thoughts, perceptions, and beliefs are accurate.

As a young child, you mind was programmed with the fundamental behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes you observed in your parents. These programs control your biology for the rest of your life, unless you consciously figure out a way to reprogram them.

Lipton’s work is exciting. Once you know that you can change your biology by changing your beliefs, you can get started with any of the methods available to change beliefs, including Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Lester Levenson’s Release Technique as taught in the Sedona Method or Abundance Course, Ho’oponopono, the Work of Byron Katie, or PSYCH-K.
