How to Use Twitter to Attract Business

Here are my thoughts on how to use twitter to attract business. A huge mistake that many businesses make is to set up a Twitter account and start tweeting marketing messages. But no one knows you yet, so no one cares.

When you set up your Twitter account, set it up with a professional photo or logo, a professional user name, a professional description, and a background that reflects your business. Be personable yet still professional looking and sounding. Just what that combination looks like will depend on the nature of your business. A stockbroker will look different from a farmer selling produce.

  • Tweet usable information related to your business. For example, tweet stock information if you are stockbroker, tips on choosing produce if you are a farmer, or tips to make money online if you are an online marketer. You can include personal messages, but remember that no one cares what you had for lunch, except maybe if you are a chef or food critic.

  • Follow people in your industry who you want to keep up with.
  • Follow people who are tweeting on topics that make them appear to be someone who would be interested in your business. Many people new to Twitter will randomly follow anyone, but just as you target customers in offline marketing, you are likely to see more results from Twitter if you work on getting a targeted following.
  • Cultivate relationships with your followers. Reply to their posts. Retweet their posts.
  • Gradually begin adding the occasional marketing message to your tweets. Let people know what you can do for them.
  • Have fun!
